“Whiteness” is a term that has been popping up lately, at a time when race is taking center stage in political debates, on talk-shows, in the news and on social media. But, whiteness isn’t a new idea. In this TEDx Talk, Gabriela Seguinot will share that, in fact, whiteness is deeply ingrained in our history and world, and has an outsized impact on the lives of people of color. We’ve all been indoctrinated into an unhealthy cycle of seeing white. So, how do we get out? Raised in the Bronx and educated in Westchester, Gabriela Seguinot has witnessed the effects of racial disparities firsthand and began piecing together the puzzle of race in today’s world. Influenced by friends, family and teachers, she was inspired to join the fight for social justice. In an effort to do so, she has attended social justice summits in New York and Nashville, and started school clubs for Latin American students and the promotion of equal education for women. Seguinot has also worked on political campaigns. She enjoys getting people involved in social justice issues, and hopes that after hearing her TEDx Talk, you will join her. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
