Around us everyday are heroes, in our movies, books, and shows, yet how many can you name that are LGBTQ+? Activist and educator Joey McGinn calls on us to stand up for queer stories and characters. He reminds us that through good and bad endings, these characters represent real people in our lives. These characters, like so many of us, deserve the love and respect that we all search for. Joey McGinn is an undergraduate student at the University of Florida studying Political Science and a student in the UFTeach Program. For the past two years, he has worked with Housing at UF as a Resident Assistant, creating inclusive communities one group of residents at a time. He is a proud Queer Educator, serving as an Assistant Director for Gatorship, the social justice initiative for UF, and through teaching a course for the Honors Program called “LGBTQ+ Characters in Science Fiction.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
