In her talk, Theophilia wanted to explore her community’s means of communication – sign language – as another form of art, instead of simply dialect for the deaf. Most of her talk is filled with silence, illustrating her own inabilities to understanding the hearing when they communicate using their own spoken languages. Combined with her own experiences, Theophilia’s talk raises an important issue pertaining to communication itself – all languages are unique, whether spoken or not. Theophilia Lim is a Secretary for the Deaf Media and Technology Association. With a Bachelor degree in IT from Linkokwing University, she also works as an animator at Joove Enterprise Sdn Bhd. Additionally, she offers private math tuition to deaf children, as well as being the founder of a local women’s clothing company. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
